MIRZAKHANI’S WORLD, NUMBER 2020

Maryam Mirzakhani was the first woman to win the Fields Medal, mathematic’s highest award, since its inception in 1936. Born in Iran in 1977 she discovered her love of math at the age of 17 when she achieved a perfect score for the Iranian Mathematics Olympiad team.

Her most notable work focused on counting the number of loops possible on hyperbolic surfaces.

“You have to spend some energy and effort to see the beauty of math,”
— Maryam Mirzakhani
